Overview

A heap-buffer overflow was found in the way samba clients processed extra long filename in a directory listing. A malicious samba server could use this flaw to cause arbitrary code execution on a samba client. Samba versions before 4.6.16, 4.7.9 and 4.8.4 are vulnerable.

These packages include redhat-release-virtualization-host, ovirt-node, and rhev-hypervisor. Red Hat Virtualization Hosts are installed using a special build of Red Hat Enterprise Linux with only the packages required to host virtual machines. RHVH features a Cockpit user interface for monitoring the host's resources and performing administrative tasks. Ubuntu Security Notice 3738-1 - Svyatoslav Phirsov discovered that the Samba libsmbclient library incorrectly handled extra long filenames. A malicious server could use this issue to cause Samba to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code. Volker Mauel discovered that Samba incorrectly handled database output. When used as an Active Directory Domain Controller, a remote authenticated attacker could use this issue to cause Samba to crash, resulting in a denial of service. This issue only affected Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Various other issues were also addressed.
