CVE-2017-7805

Status Candidate

Overview

During TLS 1.2 exchanges, handshake hashes are generated which point to a message buffer. This saved data is used for later messages but in some cases, the handshake transcript can exceed the space available in the current buffer, causing the allocation of a new buffer. This leaves a pointer pointing to the old, freed buffer, resulting in a use-after-free when handshake hashes are then calculated afterwards. This can result in a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 56, Firefox ESR < 52.4, and Thunderbird < 52.4.

Ubuntu Security Notice USN-3436-1

Ubuntu Security Notice 3436-1 - Multiple security issues were discovered in Thunderbird. If a user were tricked in to opening a specially crafted website in a browsing-like context, an attacker could potentially exploit these to read uninitialized memory, bypass phishing and malware protection, conduct cross-site scripting attacks, cause a denial of service via application crash, or execute arbitrary code. Martin Thomson discovered that NSS incorrectly generated handshake hashes. A remote attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a denial of service via application crash, or execute arbitrary code. Various other issues were also addressed.

Ubuntu Security Notice 3435-2 - USN-3435-1 fixed vulnerabilities in Firefox. The update caused the Flash plugin to crash in some circumstances. This update fixes the problem. Multiple security issues were discovered in Firefox. If a user were tricked in to opening a specially crafted website, an attacker could potentially exploit these to read uninitialized memory, obtain sensitive information, bypass phishing and malware protection, spoof the origin in modal dialogs, conduct cross-site scripting attacks, cause a denial of service via application crash, or execute arbitrary code. Martin Thomson discovered that NSS incorrectly generated handshake hashes. A remote attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a denial of service via application crash, or execute arbitrary code. Multiple security issues were discovered in WebExtensions. If a user were tricked in to installing a specially crafted extension, an attacker could potentially exploit these to download and open non-executable files without interaction, or obtain elevated privileges. Various other issues were also addressed.

Red Hat Security Advisory 2017-2832-01 - Network Security Services is a set of libraries designed to support the cross-platform development of security-enabled client and server applications. Security Fix: A use-after-free flaw was found in the TLS 1.2 implementation in the NSS library when client authentication was used. A malicious client could use this flaw to cause an application compiled against NSS to crash or, potentially, execute arbitrary code with the permission of the user running the application.
