Integer overflow in Excel in Microsoft Office 2000 SP3, Office XP SP3, Office 2003 SP3, and Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac; Excel in 2007 Microsoft Office System SP1 and SP2; Open XML File Format Converter for Mac; Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2003 SP3; Microsoft Office Excel Viewer; Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats SP1 and SP2; and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1 and SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel file with a Shared String Table (SST) record with a numeric field that specifies an invalid number of unique strings, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow, aka "Record Integer Overflow Vulnerability."

iDefense Security Advisory 06.09.09 - Remote exploitation of an integer overflow vulnerability in Microsoft Corp.'s Excel could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the current user. The vulnerability occurs when parsing a Shared String Table (SST) record inside of an Excel file. This record is used to hold a table of strings that are used inside of the document. One of the fields in this record is a 32-bit integer that represents the number of unique strings in the table. This value is used to allocate an array of pointers to the strings contained inside of the table. When allocating this array, an integer overflow occurs in the calculation of its size. This leads to a heap based buffer overflow when the array is filled with pointers to strings from the file.

Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in Microsoft Office Excel, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system. The vulnerability is caused due to an integer overflow error when processing the number of strings in a file and can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted Excel file. Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code. Microsoft Office Excel 2003 is affected.
