TITLE:
phpBB privmsg.php Cross-Site Request Forgery and Cross-Site Scripting

SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA23283

VERIFY ADVISORY:

CRITICAL:
Less critical

IMPACT:
Cross Site Scripting

WHERE:
>From remote

SOFTWARE:
phpBB 2.x
http://secunia.com/product/463/

DESCRIPTION:
Some vulnerabilities have been discovered in phpBB, which can be
exploited by malicious people to conduct cross-site request forgery
attacks and cross-site scripting attacks.

1) The application allows users to send messages via HTTP requests
without performing any validity checks to verify the request. This
can be exploited to send messages to arbitrary users by e.g. tricking
a target user into visiting a malicious website.

2) Input passed to the form field "Message body" in privmsg.php is
not properly sanitised before it is returned to the user when sending
messages to a non-existent user. This can be exploited to execute
arbitrary HTML and script code in a user's browser session in context
of an affected site.

Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities requires that the
target user is logged in.

The vulnerabilities are confirmed in version 2.0.21. Other versions
may also be affected.

SOLUTION:
Edit the source code to ensure that input is properly sanitised.
