Red Hat Security Advisory 2014-0206-01
Posted Feb 25, 2014

Red Hat Security Advisory 2014-0206-01 - OpenLDAP is an open source suite of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol applications and development tools. LDAP is a set of protocols used to access and maintain distributed directory information services over an IP network. The openldap package contains configuration files, libraries, and documentation for OpenLDAP. A denial of service flaw was found in the way the OpenLDAP server daemon performed reference counting when using the rwm overlay. A remote attacker able to query the OpenLDAP server could use this flaw to crash the server by immediately unbinding from the server after sending a search request.

Red Hat Security Advisory

Synopsis: Moderate: openldap security update
Advisory ID: RHSA-2014:0206-01
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Advisory URL: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2014-0206.html
Issue date: 2014-02-24
CVE Names: CVE-2013-4449
=====================================================================

1. Summary:

Updated openldap packages that fix one security issue are now available for
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.

The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having Moderate
security impact. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score,
which gives a detailed severity rating, is available from the CVE link in
the References section.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

RHEL Desktop Workstation (v. 5 client) - i386, x86_64
Red Hat Enterprise Linux (v. 5 server) - i386, ia64, ppc, s390x, x86_64
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop (v. 5 client) - i386, x86_64

3. Description:

OpenLDAP is an open source suite of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
(LDAP) applications and development tools. LDAP is a set of protocols used
to access and maintain distributed directory information services over an
IP network. The openldap package contains configuration files, libraries,
and documentation for OpenLDAP.

A denial of service flaw was found in the way the OpenLDAP server daemon
(slapd) performed reference counting when using the rwm (rewrite/remap)
overlay. A remote attacker able to query the OpenLDAP server could use this
flaw to crash the server by immediately unbinding from the server after
sending a search request. (CVE-2013-4449)

Red Hat would like to thank Michael Vishchers from Seven Principles AG for
reporting this issue.

All openldap users are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which
contain a backported patch to correct this issue.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via the Red Hat Network. Details on how to use the
Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
https://access.redhat.com/site/articles/11258

5. Bugs fixed (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/):

1019490 - CVE-2013-4449 openldap: segfault on certain queries with rwm overlay
