Security Advisory CERT-NL
===============================================================================
Author/Source : N.P. de Koo Index : S-96-12
Distribution : World Page : 1
Classification: External Version: 1
Subject : Java Implementations Can Allow Connections
to an Arbitrary Host Date : 06-Mar-96
===============================================================================

By courtesy of CERT Coordination Center we received the following information.

CERT Coordination Center advisory CA-96.05 reports a vulnerability
in Netscape Navigator 2.0 Java implementation and in Release
1.0 of the Java Developer's Kit from Sun Microsystems, Inc.

This vulnerability allows that Java applets can connect to arbitrary hosts on
the Internet, including those presumed to be previously inaccessible, such as
hosts behind a firewall.

This advisory provides information on patches to be obtained from
http://home.netscape.com/newsref/std/java_security.html
for the Netscape part. Sun will release a patch soon.

CERT-NL recommends, until you install the patch, disabling Java using the
"Security Preferences" dialog box.

Additional information with regards to this vulnerability is placed in
the README file associated with the advisory. You are encouraged to check
on README file updates regularly. You can automate that process by using
the CERT-NL notifier service.

All CERT Coordination Center advisories and README's are mirrored by CERT-NL.
