Apache Tomcat 7.0.32 / 6.0.36 Session Fixation
Posted May 10, 2013
Authored by Mark Thomas | Site tomcat.apache.org

Tomcat versions 7.0.0 through 7.0.32 and 6.0.21 through 6.0.36 are affected by a session fixation vulnerability. FORM authentication associates the most recent request requiring authentication with the current session. By repeatedly sending a request for an authenticated resource while the victim is completing the login form, an attacker could inject a request that would be executed using the victim's credentials. This attack has been prevented by changing the session ID prior to displaying the login page as well as after the user has successfully authenticated.

Zero Day Initiative Advisory 12-100
Posted Jun 22, 2012
Authored by Tipping Point | Site zerodayinitiative.com

Zero Day Initiative Advisory 12-100 - This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of HP OpenView Performance Manager. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the PMParamHandler component of Performance Manager, which is served via an Apache Tomcat instance that listens on TCP port 8081. The process receives a filename from a remote user and performs insufficient validation of the provided file path. Additionally, the user can specify an arbitrary extension due to premature truncation resulting from an embedded null byte. Remote unauthenticated attackers can exploit this vulnerability by sending malformed message packets to the target, which could lead to a directory traversing arbitrary file write and ultimately remote code execution under the context of the SYSTEM user.

Mandriva Linux Security Advisory 2012-085

Mandriva Linux Security Advisory 2012-085 - Apache Tomcat 5.5.x before 5.5.35, 6.x before 6.0.34, and 7.x before 7.0.23 uses an inefficient approach for handling parameters, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a request that contains many parameters and parameter values, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-4858. The updated packages have been patched to correct this issue.

Red Hat Security Advisory 2012-0681-01 - Apache Tomcat is a servlet container. JBoss Enterprise Web Server includes the Tomcat Native library, providing Apache Portable Runtime support for Tomcat. This update fixes the JBPAPP-4873, JBPAPP-6133, and JBPAPP-6852 bugs. It also resolves multiple flaws that weakened the Tomcat HTTP DIGEST authentication implementation, subjecting it to some of the weaknesses of HTTP BASIC authentication, for example, allowing remote attackers to perform session replay attacks.

Red Hat Security Advisory 2012-0475-01 - Apache Tomcat is a servlet container for the Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages technologies. It was found that the Java hashCode() method implementation was susceptible to predictable hash collisions. A remote attacker could use this flaw to cause Tomcat to use an excessive amount of CPU time by sending an HTTP request with a large number of parameters whose names map to the same hash value. This update introduces a limit on the number of parameters processed per request to mitigate this issue. The default limit is 512 for parameters and 128 for headers. These defaults can be changed by setting the org.apache.tomcat.util.http.Parameters.MAX_COUNT and org.apache.tomcat.util.http.MimeHeaders.MAX_COUNT system properties.

Liferay XSL Command Execution
Posted Apr 7, 2012
Authored by Nicolas Gregoire, Spencer McIntyre | Site metasploit.com

This Metasploit module exploits a vulnerability in the XSL parser of the XSL Content Portlet. When Tomcat is present, arbitrary code can be executed via java calls in the data fed to the Xalan XSLT processor. If XSLPAGE is defined, the user must have rights to change the content of that page (to add a new XSL portlet), otherwise it can be left blank and a new one will be created. The second method however, requires administrative privileges.

Red Hat Security Advisory 2012-0345-02 - JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform is the open source implementation of the Java EE suite of services and Portal services running atop JBoss Enterprise Application Platform. It comprises a set of offerings for enterprise customers who are looking for pre-configured profiles of JBoss Enterprise Middleware components that have been tested and certified together to provide an integrated experience. It was found that JBoss Web did not handle large numbers of parameters and large parameter values efficiently. A remote attacker could make JBoss Web use an excessive amount of CPU time by sending an HTTP request containing a large number of parameters or large parameter values. This update introduces limits on the number of parameters and headers processed per request to address this issue. The default limit is 512 for parameters and 128 for headers. These defaults can be changed by setting the org.apache.tomcat.util.http.Parameters.MAX_COUNT and org.apache.tomcat.util.http.MimeHeaders.MAX_COUNT system properties in "jboss-as/server/[PROFILE]/deploy/properties-service.xml".
