TITLE:
MySQL "dispatch_command()" Denial of Service Vulnerability
SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA35767
VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://secunia.com/advisories/35767/
DESCRIPTION:
Nikolaos Rangos has discovered a vulnerability in MySQL, which can be
exploited by malicious users to cause a DoS (Denial of Service).
The vulnerability is caused due to a format string error within the
"dispatch_command()" function in sql_parse.cc. This can be exploited
to crash an affected service via specially crafted "COM_CREATE_DB" or
"COM_DROP_DB" requests.
Successful exploitation requires create database or drop database
privileges.
The vulnerability is confirmed in version 5.0.83 for Windows. Other
versions may also be affected.
SOLUTION:
Update to version 5.1.36, which disables support for the vulnerable
requests.
Grant create database and drop database privileges to trusted users
only.
