ngrep-1.41.tar.bz2
Posted Oct 21, 2003
Authored by Jordan Ritter | Site ngrep.sourceforge.net

Ngrep is a powerful network sniffing tool which strives to provide most of GNU grep's common features, applying them to all network traffic. ngrep is a pcap-aware tool that will allow you to specify extended regular expressions to match against data payloads of packets. It currently recognizes TCP, UDP and ICMP across Ethernet, PPP, SLIP, FDDI, and null interfaces, and understands bpf filter logic in the same fashion as more common packet sniffing tools, such as tcpdump and snoop. Windows binaries available here.

Changes: Added support for IEEE 802.11 Wireless links, ngrep now revokes its own privileges to a safe user ("nobody" by default), compile fixes to improve portability, added -S switch to limit the amount of bytes in each packet ngrep will inspect, ngrep now recognizes the flags associated with TCP ECN Congestion Notification, relaxed licensing restrictions, and windows versions now use the latest libpcap.

Changes: This is a UNIX-only release. No significant changes were made that affect the Win32 version, which will remain at 1.40 for this release. Added ISDN (SLL) support, OpenBSD tun device support, updated configure.in to support specifying pcap directory, and fixed bugs.

ngrep-lib-1.3.tar.gz
Posted Jan 2, 2002
Site mavetju.org

ngrep-lib is a packet filtering library based on ngrep which provides an easy interface. Instead of having to worry about pcap options, syntax, processing of IP packets, etc. you can just initialize and run, letting callback functions handle the rest.

Changes: Incorporates changes from version v1.40.1.

Changes: Updating the display when window sizes change in standard match mode, new configure options to compile with the pcre library (which is more license-friendly, albeit slower) and --without restart (remove the pcap restart API call), and bug fixes.

ngrep is an awesomly powerful network too which strives to provide most of GNU grep's common features, applying them to the network layer. ngrep is a pcap-aware tool that will allow you to specify extended regular expressions to match against data payloads of packets. It currently recognizes TCP, UDP and ICMP across Ethernet, PPP, SLIP and null interfaces, and understands bpf filter logic in the same fashion as more common packet sniffing tools, such as tcpdump and snoop.

Changes: -l - line buffer stdout. Useful when working across pipes or with large buffers. Several non-critical bugfixes, which affected performance, few more optimizations that will potentially increase performance and decrease dropped packets on interfaces that see a lot of traffic. Added FDDI support, and now compiles on LinuxPPC, OSF1. Linux binary here.

Changes: An updated udp match optimization, -v (version) is now -V, and -v has become inverted match, -d lo (null linktype) and the ability to match proto icmp have been added, along with an updated configure.in to handle old installations of pcap more gracefully.
