Career memes of the week: hacker

3 Dec 2013

Twenty-one days after Apple released its iOS7.0.3, three hackers broke into the consumer tech giant’s latest operating system in 30 seconds.

Wang Qi, Chen Liang and Fang Jiahong from Shanghai, China, are professional hackers who broke into iOS7.0.3 at the Mobile Pwn2Own contest in Tokyo, Japan, on 13-14 November, Global Times reported. The trio did conduct prep work prior to the competition.

Hackers have traditionally been portrayed as cyber-criminals who break into computer systems to steal information for financial gain. However, hacking does have a positive side, as demonstrated by the Mobile Pwn2Own contest – to help a company identify flaws and vulnerabilities in their systems’ security and thereby strengthen it further.

This week’s career memes pay tongue-in-cheek tribute to those highly skilled programmers – ‘white hat’ or ‘ethical’ hackers – who can find work with governments, corporations and other organisations.
