Inquiry set on suspected Mich. data breach

PONTIAC, Mich., March 2 (UPI) -- Michigan prosecutors say a computer technician wanted to breach state law enforcement records as well as his wife's e-mail.

Leon Walker of Rochester Hills goes on trial April 11 on charges of reading his wife Clara's e-mail in 2008 after she filed for divorce, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Leon Walker, Clara's third husband, suspected she was having an affair with her second husband, who had been arrested for beating her in the presence of her child with her first husband. Walker notified the first husband, who filed for custody.

Prosecutors want to tell jurors Walker also sought to hack into CLEMIS, the law enforcement system.

On Wednesday, Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Martha Anderson set an evidentiary hearing March 23 to determine whether Walker planned to break into CLEMIS.

Walker says he merely made inquiries about CLEMIS to find out whether anyone has been charged with the same felony for reading a spouse's e-mail. No one has.

"He wasn't trying to get into CLEMIS," said his attorney, Leon Weiss. "He asked a few questions in a very transparent way. There is no subterfuge."
