Hackers pull hoax on North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional district

HUNTERDON COUNTY -- Someone didn't want school to start today.

An unknown person or persons hacked onto the server hosting the North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional School District Web site, and was redirecting traffic to a page that read: "No school due to swine flu," district spokeswoman Maren Smagala said.
Anyone trying to get to the North-Voorhees Web site would get that message instead, she said.

The district learned about the hoax Tuesday evening and fixed it, but the message was back up again Wednesday morning, Smagala said. She said it was corrected again by midday Wednesday.

Nothing on the school site was harmed. The hacker or hackers didn't access the server where the school's data is stored; they only accessed Network Solutions, the company that hosts the district Web site, Smagala said.

The State Police Cyber-Crimes Unit is investigating the incident with assistance from the Clinton Township Police Department.

"It isn't the first day of school without something like this happening," Smagala said.

She said the hoax didn't keep any students home today.
