Hackers did not get personal information, state says

State investigators have concluded that the hacker who broke into the Oregon Department of Human Services computer network last week did not access personal information.

"We discovered that the intruder had breached one layer of a multi-layer defense and the person did not get beyond that," Lonn Hoklin, spokesman for the state Department of Administrative Services, said Tuesday.

Hackers attempt to break into state government's databanks hundreds of times every day. But it is unusual for one to be successful as happened Wednesday afternoon.
Hoklin said investigators could not determine whether the intruder was based in the United States or another country.

The Department of Human Services is the state's largest agency, providing Oregonians with medical insurance, food stamps and various other services.

A security upgrade, already planned for the agency's network, was accelerated and put into place following last week's breach, Hoklin said. -- Michelle Cole; michellecole@news.oregonian.com
