Ksplice Linux Kernel Updater
Posted Jan 23, 2009
Authored by Anders Kaseorg | Site ksplice.com

Ksplice is practical technology for updating the Linux kernel without rebooting. It enables you to avoid the disruptive process of rebooting for kernel security updates and bugfixes. By making it easy to keep your systems up to date, Ksplice helps you avoid the security and stability risks of running out-of-date software.

Changes: Fixed a Makefile bug that prevented the initial prebuild from succeeding. Documented some options. Added support for changing CRCs of exported symbols. Added pre-post matching of altinstructions and other table sections. Fixed a build failure due to depmod when using a kbuild output directory.

Mandos Encrypted File System Unattended Reboot Utility
Posted Jan 7, 2009
Authored by Teddy | Site fukt.bsnet.se

The Mandos system allows computers to have encrypted root file systems and at the same time be capable of remote or unattended reboots. The computers run a small client program in the initial RAM disk environment which will communicate with a server over a network. All network communication is encrypted using TLS. The clients are identified by the server using an OpenPGP key that is unique to each client. The server sends the clients an encrypted password. The encrypted password is decrypted by the clients using the same OpenPGP key, and the password is then used to unlock the root file system.

Changes: Now tries to change to user and group "_mandos" before falling back to trying the old values "mandos", "nobody:nogroup", and "65534". Does not abort on startup even if no clients are defined in clients.conf. Other improvements and changes.

Cutter allows network administrators to close TCP/IP connections running over a Linux/IPtables firewall. It closes the connection in such a way as to lead both ends (client and server) to believe that it was aborted by the other.

etherpuppet.c

Etherpuppet is a small program for Linux that will create a virtual interface (TUN/TAP) on one machine from the ethernet interface of another machine through a TCP connection. Everything seen by the real interface will be seen by the virtual one. Everything sent to the virtual interface will be emitted by the real one. It has been designed because one often has a small machine as his Internet gateway, and sometimes want to run some big applications that need raw access to this interface, for sniffing (Ethereal, etc.) or for crafting packets that do not survive being reassembled, NATed, etc. It can even run on Linux embedded routers such as the Linksys WRT54G.

chntpw is a Linux utility to (re)set the password of any user that has a valid (local) account on your WinNT or Win2000 system, by modifying the crypted password in the registry's SAM file. You do not need to know the old password to set a new one. It works offline (i.e., you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a linux floppy disk). The bootdisk includes stuff to access NTFS partitions and scripts to glue the whole thing together. This utility works with SYSKEY and includes the option to turn it off. A bootdisk image is provided.
