TOR Virtual Network Tunneling Tool 0.2.9.9
Posted Jan 24, 2017
Authored by Roger Dingledine | Site tor.eff.org

Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. It provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy. Individuals can use it to keep remote Websites from tracking them and their family members. They can also use it to connect to resources such as news sites or instant messaging services that are blocked by their local Internet service providers (ISPs).

Changes: Tor 0.2.9.9 fixes a denial-of-service bug where an attacker could cause relays and clients to crash, even if they were not built with the --enable-expensive-hardening option. This bug affects all 0.2.9.x versions, and also affects 0.3.0.1-alpha: all relays running an affected version should upgrade. This release also resolves a client-side onion service reachability bug, and resolves a pair of small portability issues.

Changes: Tor 0.2.9.8 is the first stable release of the Tor 0.2.9 series. The Tor 0.2.9 series makes mandatory a number of security features that were formerly optional. It includes support for a new shared-randomness protocol that will form the basis for next generation hidden services, includes a single-hop hidden service mode for optimizing .onion services that don't actually want to be hidden, tries harder not to overload the directory authorities with excessive downloads, and supports a better protocol versioning scheme for improved compatibility with other implementations of the Tor protocol. And of course, there are numerous other bugfixes and improvements.

Tor-ramdisk is an i686 uClibc-based micro Linux distribution whose only purpose is to host a Tor server in an environment that maximizes security and privacy. Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. Security is enhanced by employing a monolithically compiled GRSEC/PAX patched kernel and hardened system tools. Privacy is enhanced by turning off logging at all levels so that even the Tor operator only has access to minimal information. Finally, since everything runs in ephemeral memory, no information survives a reboot, except for the Tor configuration file and the private RSA key which may be exported/imported by FTP. x86_64 version.

Changes: Tor was updated to 0.2.8.9 and the kernel was bumped to linux-4.7.9+. Gentoo's hardened-patches-4.7.9-1.extras.

Changes: This release of tor-ramdisk switches from the tor-0.2.6 branch to the 0.2.7. This new branch depends on openssl’s elliptic curves code which is patented and can’t be distribute in tor-ramdisk. Luckily Gentoo has been working on porting over libressl as a drop in alternative to openssl.
