TOR Virtual Network Tunneling Tool 0.3.4.8
Posted Sep 11, 2018
Authored by Roger Dingledine | Site tor.eff.org

Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. It provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy. Individuals can use it to keep remote Websites from tracking them and their family members. They can also use it to connect to resources such as news sites or instant messaging services that are blocked by their local Internet service providers (ISPs).

Changes: The Tor 0.3.4 series includes improvements for running Tor in low-power and embedded environments, which should help performance in general.

GNUnet P2P Framework 0.11.0pre66
Posted Jun 6, 2018
Authored by Christian Grothoff | Site ovmj.org

GNUnet is a peer-to-peer framework with focus on providing security. All peer-to-peer messages in the network are confidential and authenticated. The framework provides a transport abstraction layer and can currently encapsulate the network traffic in UDP (IPv4 and IPv6), TCP (IPv4 and IPv6), HTTP, or SMTP messages. GNUnet supports accounting to provide contributing nodes with better service. The primary service build on top of the framework is anonymous file sharing.

Changes: This is a pre-release to assist developers and downstream packagers to test the package before the final release after four years of development.

The Tor 0.3.3 series includes controller support and other improvements for v3 onion services, official support for embedding Tor within other applications, and our first non-trivial module written in the Rust programming language. (Rust is still not enabled by default when building Tor.) And as usual, there are numerous other smaller bugfixes, features, and improvements.

Changes: Tor 0.3.1.7 is the first stable release in the 0.3.1 series. With the 0.3.1 series, Tor now serves and downloads directory information in more compact formats, to save on bandwidth overhead. It also contains a new padding system to resist netflow-based traffic analysis, and experimental support for building parts of Tor in Rust (though no parts of Tor are in Rust yet). There are also numerous small features, bugfixes on earlier release series, and groundwork for the hidden services revamp of 0.3.2. Various other updates.

Anyone running a hidden service should upgrade to this version, or to some other version with fixes for TROVE-2017-004 and TROVE-2017-005. Tor 0.3.0.8 also includes fixes for several key management bugs that sometimes made relays unreliable, as well as several other bugfixes described below.

Changes: Tor 0.3.0.6 is the first stable release of the Tor 0.3.0 series. With the 0.3.0 series, clients and relays now use Ed25519 keys to authenticate their link connections to relays, rather than the old RSA1024 keys that they used before. (Circuit crypto has been Curve25519-authenticated since 0.2.4.8-alpha.) This series also includes numerous other small features and bugfixes, along with more groundwork for the upcoming hidden-services revamp.

It includes support for a new shared-randomness protocol that will form the basis for next generation hidden services, includes a single-hop hidden service mode for optimizing .onion services that don't actually want to be hidden, tries harder not to overload the directory authorities with excessive downloads, and supports a better protocol versioning scheme for improved compatibility with other implementations of the Tor protocol. And of course, there are numerous other bugfixes and improvements.

Tor-ramdisk is an i686 uClibc-based micro Linux distribution whose only purpose is to host a Tor server in an environment that maximizes security and privacy. Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. Security is enhanced by employing a monolithically compiled GRSEC/PAX patched kernel and hardened system tools. Privacy is enhanced by turning off logging at all levels so that even the Tor operator only has access to minimal information. Finally, since everything runs in ephemeral memory, no information survives a reboot, except for the Tor configuration file and the private RSA key which may be exported/imported by FTP. x86_64 version.

Changes: Tor was updated to 0.2.8.9 and the kernel was bumped to linux-4.7.9+. Gentoo's hardened-patches-4.7.9-1.extras.
