Ubuntu Security Notice USN-6445-1
Posted Oct 20, 2023
Authored by Ubuntu | Site security.ubuntu.com

Ubuntu Security Notice 6445-1 - It was discovered that the IPv6 implementation in the Linux kernel contained a high rate of hash collisions in connection lookup table. A remote attacker could use this to cause a denial of service. Daniel Trujillo, Johannes Wikner, and Kaveh Razavi discovered that some AMD processors utilising speculative execution and branch prediction may allow unauthorised memory reads via a speculative side-channel attack. A local attacker could use this to expose sensitive information, including kernel memory.

Ubuntu Security Notice 6429-3 - USN-6429-1 fixed vulnerabilities in curl. This update provides the corresponding updates for Ubuntu 23.10. Jay Satiro discovered that curl incorrectly handled hostnames when using a SOCKS5 proxy. In environments where curl is configured to use a SOCKS5 proxy, a remote attacker could possibly use this issue to execute arbitrary code. This issue only affected Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 23.04. It was discovered that curl incorrectly handled cookies when an application duplicated certain handles. A local attacker could possibly create a cookie file and inject arbitrary cookies into subsequent connections.

TOR Virtual Network Tunneling Tool 0.4.8.7
Posted Oct 2, 2023
Authored by Roger Dingledine | Site tor.eff.org

Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. It provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy. Individuals can use it to keep remote Websites from tracking them and their family members. They can also use it to connect to resources such as news sites or instant messaging services that are blocked by their local Internet service providers (ISPs). This is the source code release.

Changes: Fixed an issue that prevented pre-building more conflux sets after existing sets had been used. Regenerate fallback directories generated on September 25, 2023. Updated the geoip files to match the IPFire Location Database, as retrieved on 2023/09/25.

Microsoft Error Reporting Local Privilege Elevation
Posted Sep 27, 2023
Authored by bwatters-r7, Filip Dragovic, Octoberfest7 | Site metasploit.com

This Metasploit module takes advantage of a bug in the way Windows error reporting opens the report parser. If you open a report, Windows uses a relative path to locate the rendering program. By creating a specific alternate directory structure, we can coerce Windows into opening an arbitrary executable as SYSTEM. If the current user is a local admin, the system will attempt impersonation and the exploit will fail.
