Tinc Virtual Private Network Daemon 1.0.29
Posted Oct 10, 2016
Authored by Ivo Timmermans | Site tinc.nl.linux.org

tinc is a Virtual Private Network (VPN) daemon that uses tunneling and encryption to create a secure private network between multiple hosts on the Internet. This tunneling allows VPN sites to share information with each other over the Internet without exposing any information.

Changes: Fixed UDP communication with peers with link-local IPv6 addresses. Ensured compatibility with OpenSSL 1.1.0. Ensured autoreconf can be run without requiring autoconf-archive. Now logs warnings about dropped packets only at debug level 5.

Tincd Post-Authentication Remote TCP Stack Buffer Overflow
Posted Dec 1, 2014
Authored by Martin Schobert, Tobias Ospelt | Site metasploit.com

This Metasploit module exploits a stack buffer overflow in Tinc's tincd service. After authentication, a specially crafted tcp packet (default port 655) leads to a buffer overflow and allows to execute arbitrary code. This Metasploit module has been tested with tinc-1.1pre6 on Windows XP (custom calc payload) and Windows 7 (windows/meterpreter/reverse_tcp), and tinc version 1.0.19 from the ports of FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE # 0 and various other OS, see targets. The exploit probably works for all versions <= 1.1pre6. A manually compiled version (1.1.pre6) on Ubuntu 12.10 with gcc 4.7.2 seems to be a non-exploitable crash due to calls to __memcpy_chk depending on how tincd was compiled. Bug got fixed in version 1.0.21/1.1pre7. While writing this module it was recommended to the maintainer to start using DEP/ASLR and other protection mechanisms.

tinc is a Virtual Private Network (VPN) daemon that uses tunneling and encryption to create a secure private network between multiple hosts on the Internet. This tunneling allows VPN sites to share information with each other over the Internet without exposing any information.

Changes: This release enables various compiler hardening flags by default. It has updated support for Solaris, allowing switch mode on Solaris11. Configuration will now also be read from a conf.d directory. It will try to reload /etc/resolv.conf after receiving SIGALRM. This release fixes a potential routing loop when IndirectData or TCPOnly is used and broadcast packets are being sent, improves security with constant time memcmp and stricter use of OpenSSL's RNG functions, and has fixed all issues found by Coverity.

Changes: This release improves the default device selection on FreeBSD and NetBSD when using switch mode. PMTU discovery is now also applied to VLAN-tagged traffic. The LocalDiscovery option now makes use of all addresses tinc is bound to. The PriorityInheritance option now also works with switch mode. A crash when using a SOCKS5 proxy has been fixed. There are minor improvements and clarifications in the documentation, support for tunemu on iOS devices is fixed, and tinc can now be cross-compiled with Android's NDK.

Changes: This release fixes reading configuration files that do not end with a newline, allows arbitrary configuration options to be specified on the command line, allows all options in both tinc.conf and the local host config file, and has configurable replay window, UDP send and receive buffers for performance tuning. Changes: tinc may now be built without LZO or Zlib. MSS of TCP packets can be clamped in both directions. Experimental StrictSubnets, Forwarding, and DirectOnly options were added, giving you more control over information and packets received from or sent to other nodes. tinc never sends symbolic names for ports over the wire anymore.

Changes: This release really allows fast roaming of hosts to other nodes in a switched VPN, fixes potentially missing or incorrect environment variables when calling host-up/down and subnet-up/down scripts, allows the port to be specified in Address statements, clamps MSS of TCP packets to the discovered path MTU, and lets two nodes behind NAT learn each other\'s current UDP address and port via a third node, potentially allowing direct communications in a similar way to STUN.
