The vulnerability is caused due to Windows not properly expanding certain values in environment variables (e.g. "%APPDATA%" in the "PATH" environment variable), leading to the unexpanded value being used as relative search path when loading resources. This can be exploited to load arbitrary resources by tricking a user into opening a file located on a remote WebDAV or SMB share with certain applications. Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code. Currently, known applications presenting valid attack vectors are e.g. Apple iTunes and Safari. The vulnerability is confirmed in a fully patched Windows XP Professional SP3 and is also reported in Windows Vista Business, and Windows 7 Professional. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Do not open untrusted files. PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: Known, documented bug in Windows. Security impact reported by ACROS Security.
