The security issue is caused due to the application using a configuration file "/tmp/.ettercap_gtk" in an insecure manner when running the application with the "-G" option. This can be exploited to e.g. overwrite arbitrary files via symlink attacks. NOTE: This can further be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow due to a boundary error in the "gtkui_conf_read()" function in src/interfaces/gtk/ec_gtk_conf.c and potentially execute arbitrary code. The security issue is confirmed in version 0.7.3 on a Linux system. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Restrict access to trusted users only.
