The vulnerability is caused due to an integer overflow error when calculating the space required for the specified number of points in a polyline or polygon. This can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow during parsing of objects in Rich Text Format (.rtf) files e.g. when a user opens a specially crafted .rtf file with Word or previews a specially crafted e-mail. Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code. ====================================================================== 5) Solution Apply patches from MS08-072. ====================================================================== 6) Time Table 16/05/2008 - Vendor notified. 16/05/2008 - Vendor response. 03/07/2008 - Vendor provides status update. 15/08/2008 - Status update requested from vendor. 15/08/2008 - Vendor provides status update. 30/09/2008 - Vendor provides status update. 09/12/2008 - Vendor acknowledges that fix will be issued today. 09/12/2008 - Vendor publishes security bulletin. 09/12/2008 - Public disclosure. ====================================================================== 7) Credits Discovered by Dyon Balding, Secunia Research. ====================================================================== 8) References The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) project has assigned CVE-2008-4025 for the vulnerability.
