The weakness is caused due to /sbin/service invoking the "launchctl" utility without an absolute pathname, and is called by "writeconfig", which has the setuid bit set. This can be exploited to perform certain actions with root privileges by placing a malicious "launchctl" binary in the path. Successful exploitation requires interaction of an administrative user. The weakness is reported in Mac OS X 10.4.8. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Grant only trusted users access to affected systems.
