TITLE: NetBSD mail Insecure Record File Creation SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA19465 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/19465/ CRITICAL: Less critical IMPACT: Exposure of sensitive information WHERE: Local system OPERATING SYSTEM: NetBSD 1.x http://secunia.com/product/255/ DESCRIPTION: A security issue has been reported in NetBSD, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain knowledge of potentially sensitive information. The problem is that the "mail" program creates record files with insecure permissions when the "set record" setting is present in a user's .mailrc and the default umask is set. This may allow other users to read the record of a user's e-mail. NOTE: By default systems are not affected as "set record" is not present in .mailrc. SOLUTION: Fixes are not available for the 1.6 branch. Upgrade to a later version for which fixes are available (see vendor advisory for additional information). PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: The vendor credits Johan Veenhuizen.
