TITLE: IPUpdate "memmcat" Buffer Overflow Vulnerability SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA17681 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/17681/ CRITICAL: Less critical IMPACT: System access WHERE: >From remote SOFTWARE: IPUpdate 1.x http://secunia.com/product/6180/ DESCRIPTION: A vulnerability has been reported in IPUpdate, which potentially can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system. The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in the "memmcat()" function when appending input into a heap-based buffer. This can cause a heap-based buffer overflow when an overly long reply is received from a DNS server. Successful exploitation requires that the user uses IPUpdate with a malicious DNS server. Note: An unspecified boundary error that can cause a buffer overflow when formatting tsig records has also been reported. SOLUTION: Update to version 1.1.0. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=146709 PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: Reported by vendor.
