TITLE: newsgrab Two Vulnerabilities SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA14083 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/14083/ CRITICAL: Moderately critical IMPACT: Privilege escalation, System access WHERE: >From remote SOFTWARE: newsgrab 0.x http://secunia.com/product/4588/ DESCRIPTION: Niels Heinen has reported two vulnerabilities in newsgrab, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to perform certain actions on a vulnerable system with escalated privileges, and potentially by malicious people to compromise a user's system. 1) The problem is that downloaded files are created insecurely in the output directory which is world writeable. This can e.g. be exploited via symlink attacks to overwrite arbitrary files with the privileges of the user running newsgrab. 2) Input from newsgroups messages isn't properly sanitised before being used to save attachments. This can be exploited to place attachments in arbitrary locations via directory traversal attacks. SOLUTION: Update to version 0.5.0pre4. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=52048 PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: Niels Heinen ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About: This Advisory was delivered by Secunia as a free service to help everybody keeping their systems up to date against the latest vulnerabilities.
