The Hare virus is difficult to detect and is considered a severe and highly destructive threat. The virus is set to strike on August 22nd and September 22nd. On these dates, Hare will destroy all data on an infected PC by overwriting the computer's hard drive. The Hare virus was first distributed over the Internet in May of this year. Since then, two other versions of the virus have also been distributed from a variety of Internet usenet newsgroups. The Hare virus has been detected in the United States, Canada and Europe. Hare first infects the master boot sector of the PC, and when the PC is restarted, installs itself into memory, thereby contaminating .COM and .EXE files as well as any mounted floppy diskettes. Hare avoids detection from traditional anti-virus software by remaining dormant within infected files and slowly changing as it replicates. Cheyenne Software has posted a free update for InocuLAN and Cheyenne AntiVirus that detects and cures the Hare virus. The company strongly recommends that users download the update from Cheyenne's web site and use it to protect their PCs against the Hare virus before August 22nd. LAROUX--FIRST MICROSOFT EXCEL VIRUS Unlike the Hare Virus, the Laroux virus is not destructive, but still can be quite a nuisance and create panic. The Laroux virus is the first reported Microsoft Excel macro virus. It attaches to and infects Microsoft Excel documents and once a document is infected with Laroux, the virus will infect all future Excel documents. Fortunately, Laroux simply creates a blank worksheet and the virus is easily detected and prevented with the latest update from Cheyenne for InocuLAN or Cheyenne AntiVirus. NEW ANTIVIRUS AGENTS FOR E-MAIL E-mail and groupware applications can be a dangerous breeding ground for viruses. Rapidly-spreading macro viruses, such as Concept and Laroux, are able to reside in documents within groupware systems and avoid detection by traditional anti-virus software. Cheyenne's new AntiVirus Agents announced last week enable organizations to detect and cure these, and other viruses before they can infect users. The Cheyenne AntiVirus Agents work in conjunction with InocuLAN to protect Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange Server and Novell GroupWise applications.
