Silicon Graphics Inc. has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL SGI systems running IRIX versions 5.3, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4. This issue will be corrected in future releases of IRIX. - - -------------- - - --- Impact --- - - -------------- The XFS filesystem is an SGI specific architecture for organizing and accessing files on a local physical system. The XFS filesystem is an optional product for IRIX versions 5.3 and 6.1 but is the default filesystem for IRIX 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4. Silicon Graphics systems that are using XFS filesystems may be vulnerable to a security issue where files may be truncated. A local account is required in order to exploit this vulnerability both locally and remotely. It is believed that this vulnerability information is not public knowledge and this has afforded SGI the opportunity to fully investigate this issue and provide the following information and solutions. - - ---------------- - - --- Solution --- - - ---------------- Please, note that this security issue is only applicable *IFF* the XFS filesystem software is installed *and* XFS filesystems are in use on the system. To determine if the XFS Filesystem software is installed on a particular system, the following command can be used: % /usr/sbin/versions -Inv | grep -i sw.xfs I eoe2.sw.xfs 09/16/96 XFS Filesystem In the above case, the XFS filesystem software is installed and the next step is to determine if a XFS filesystem is being used on the system. If no output is returned by the versions command, the XFS filesystem software is not installed and no further action is required. To determine if a XFS filesystem is being used on the system, the following command can be used: % /etc/mount | grep -i xfs /dev/root on / type xfs (rw,raw=/dev/rroot) In the above case, there is an XFS filesystem in use on the system and the following steps can be used to neutralize the exposure by installing the recommended patches below. If no output is returned by the mount command, there is not an XFS filesystem in use on the system. Although at this time no further action is required, in the future, if an XFS filesystem is used on the system, the steps below should be used. Unfortunately, there are no immediate or temporary workarounds for this issue. The issue can only be addressed with a patch. **** IRIX 3.x, 4.x, 5.0.x, 5.1.x, and 5.2 **** The XFS file system was not available for these versions of IRIX and therefore are not vulnerable. No further action is required. **** IRIX 5.3 **** For the IRIX operating system version 5.3, an inst-able patch has been generated and made available via anonymous FTP and your service/support provider. The patch is number 1409 and will install on IRIX 5.3 only. The SGI anonymous FTP site is sgigate.sgi.com (204.94.209.1) or its mirror, ftp.sgi.com. An update to "IRIX 6.3 for O2 including R10000" is required for this security issue. This security issue has been addressed in the "IRIX 6.3 for O2 including R10000" distribution which will go to all registered O2 customers. **** IRIX 6.4 S2MP (Origin200, Origin2000, Onyx2) **** IRIX operating system version 6.4 S2MP (Origin200, Origin2000, Onyx2) is a limited release version. A future release of the IRIX 6.4 operating system will be released that will have corrections for this issue.
