The vulnerability is caused due to the Cyrus SASL library in the SMTP server not releasing session context data structures when processing certain authentication methods (e.g. CRAM-MD5 or DIGEST-MD5). This can be exploited to access or manipulate context dependent memory by aborting an authentication session and starting a new one. Successful exploitation requires that Cyrus SASL authentication is enabled (e.g. "smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes") and supports methods other than PLAIN or LOGIN. NOTE: Successful exploitation for arbitrary code execution has not been proven, but cannot be ruled out based on current vulnerability details. This section will be updated when more information becomes available. The vulnerability is reported in versions prior to 2.5.13, 2.6.10, 2.7.4, and 2.8.3. SOLUTION: Update to version 2.5.13, 2.6.10, 2.7.4, or 2.8.3. PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: The vendor credits Thomas Jarosch, Intra2net AG.
