CVE-2019-2054

Status Candidate

Overview

In the seccomp implementation prior to kernel version 4.8, there is a possible seccomp bypass due to seccomp policies that allow the use of ptrace. This could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Kernel Live Patch Security Notice LSN-0058-1
Posted Oct 23, 2019
Authored by Benjamin M. Romer

It was discovered that a race condition existed in the GFS2 file system in the Linux kernel. A local attacker could possibly use this to cause a denial of service (system crash). It was discovered that a use-after-free error existed in the block layer subsystem of the Linux kernel when certain failure conditions occurred. A local attacker could possibly use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code. Various other issues were also addressed.

Ubuntu Security Notice 4095-2 - USN-4095-1 fixed vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. This update provides the corresponding updates for the Linux Hardware Enablement kernel from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS for Ubuntu 14.04 ESM. Eli Biham and Lior Neumann discovered that the Bluetooth implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly validate elliptic curve parameters during Diffie-Hellman key exchange in some situations. An attacker could use this to expose sensitive information. Various other issues were also addressed.

Vasiliy Kulikov discovered that the Bluetooth stack did not correctly check that device name strings were NULL terminated. A local attacker could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service, or leak contents of kernel stack memory, leading to a loss of privacy. It was discovered that the Linux kernel on ARM processors allowed a tracing process to modify a syscall after a seccomp decision had been made on that syscall. A local attacker could possibly use this to bypass seccomp restrictions. Various other issues were also addressed.

Ubuntu Security Notice 4076-1 - It was discovered that a race condition existed in the Serial Attached SCSI implementation in the Linux kernel. A local attacker could possibly use this to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code. It was discovered that the ext4 file system implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly zero out memory in some situations. A local attacker could use this to expose sensitive information. Various other issues were also addressed.
