SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA38265

VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://secunia.com/advisories/38265/

DESCRIPTION:
Tavis Ormandy has discovered a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows,
which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated
privileges.

The vulnerability is caused due to an error within the #GP trap
handler (nt!KiTrap0D), which can be exploited to execute arbitrary
code with kernel privileges.

Successful exploitation requires access to 16-bit applications.

The vulnerability is confirmed in a fully patched Windows XP SP2 and
reported in Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows
Server 2008, Windows 7, and potentially other 32-bit x86 versions of
Windows NT since July 27th, 1993.

SOLUTION:
Restrict access to trusted users only. Disable support for 16-bit
applications.
