TITLE:
Pidgin Multiple Denial of Service Weaknesses

SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA36601

VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://secunia.com/advisories/36601/

DESCRIPTION:
Some weaknesses have been reported in Pidgin, which can be exploited
by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service).

1) An error in the implementation of the XMPP protocol can be
exploited to cause a crash when a custom smiley is processed as an
error response.

2) An error exists in the implementation of the MSN protocol when
converting the encoding of a handwritten message. This can be
exploited to cause a crash when an uninitialised variable is
improperly used.

3) An error in the implementation of the MSN protocol can be
exploited to trigger a NULL-pointer dereference via an SLP invite
message missing expected fields.

4) An error in the processing of IRC messages can be exploited to
trigger a NULL-pointer dereference when a specially crafted IRC TOPIC
message is received from a malicious IRC server.

SOLUTION:
Fixed in the development repository.

The patches will reportedly be included in an upcoming 2.6.2 version.
