TITLE:

SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:

VERIFY ADVISORY:

CRITICAL:
Less critical

IMPACT:
DoS

WHERE:
>From remote

OPERATING SYSTEM:
Gentoo Linux 1.x
http://secunia.com/product/339/

DESCRIPTION:
Gentoo has acknowledged a security issue in file, which potentially
can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of
Service).

The security issue is caused due to certain regular expressions,
which can consume all available CPU resources when identifying a
specially crafted file. This can be exploited to cause a DoS by e.g.
tricking an automated system into identifying a malicious file using
the "file" command.

NOTE: Successful exploitation may require that the system uses glibc
2.5.

SOLUTION:
Update to version "sys-apps/file-4.20-r1" or later.
