DESCRIPTION:
infamous41md has reported some vulnerabilities in Smail-3, which
potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain
escalated privileges and by malicious people to compromise a
vulnerable system.
1) A boundary error within the SMTP server when handling email
addresses can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow by
passing an overly long string to the "MAIL FROM" command.
According to the reporter, this can be exploited to execute arbitrary
code and a PoC has been released. However, this is disputed by the
vendor.
2) Some design errors exist within the signal handling code. This may
potentially be exploited by malicious, local users to execute
arbitrary code with escalated privileges, but has reportedly not been
tested by the reporter.
The vulnerabilities have been reported in smail-3.2.0.120. Other
versions may also be affected.
SOLUTION:
According to the vendor, the first vulnerability will be fixed in an
upcoming release.
