- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------

Netscape Navigator is a web browser program for accessing the World
Wide Web (WWW). During regular use, Netscape Navigator makes use of
record keeping mechanisms known as cookies and submission forms.

Several privacy vulnerabilities ("Tracker Bug" and "Bell Labs Privacy
Bug") have been discovered in the Netscape Navigator program which allow
malicious web servers to obtain unauthorized access to cookie and form
submission information.

Silicon Graphics Inc. has investigated the issue and recommends the
following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

Netscape Navigator is installed by default on IRIX 6.2+ operating systems,
during the installation of IRIX Application CD and Desktop Special Edition
(DSE) CD or web product software bundles like the WebFORCE CDs.

The exploit requires a user to browse a malicious web server.

This vulnerability has been publically discussed and more information
can be found on Netscape's Security Note Web Page:

http://home.netscape.com/assist/security/resources/notes.html

and on Netscape's Security Home Page:

http://home.netscape.com/assist/security/index.html

- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------

The solution to this issue is to install or upgrade to version 3.04
or later of the Netscape Navigator program.

To see which version of Netscape you have currently installed, run
netscape and in the 'Help' menu choose 'About Netscape.'

Silicon Graphics provides a customized Netscape Navigator 3.04
subsystem for IRIX 5.3, 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4 and it can be found at the
following URL:

http://www.sgi.com/Products/Evaluation/

Generic, unsupported versions can be found at Netscape's Netcenter
Web Site:

http://home.netscape.com/download/

- ------------------------
- --- Acknowledgments ---
- ------------------------

Silicon Graphics wishes to thank Netscape, the CERT Coordination Center,
and the Internet Community at large for their assistance in this issue.
