This bulletin reports a recently announced security vulner-
ability. It may contain a workaround or software
patch. Bulletins should be considered urgent as vulnera-
bility information is likely to be widely known by the time
a patch is issued or other solutions are developed.
===========================================================
Version 0.07A of NetKit-B, a collection of basic network tools,
has been released. Its components have been updated to address
many security vulnerabilities.
SYSTEMS AFFECTED
Systems using NetKit-B version 0.06 or earlier are affected.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
NetKit-B is a collection of various basic network tools (e.g.,
telnet, ftp, finger, rsh, etc.). NetKit-B is generally packaged
for Linux systems but is portable to other UNIX variants.
There are known vulnerabilities in various components of older
versions of NetKit-B. Most of the vulnerabilities deal with
overflowing buffers so that arbitrary commands can be executed.
For instance, an old fingerd vulnerability allowed users to enter
too many characters for input. These extra characters could
include an arbitrary command that would be executed by fingerd.
The updated components of NetKit-B include the following:
fingerd
talkd
rlogin
rshd
rsh
ping
telnetd
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Users should replace their network tools with those found in
NetKit-B version 0.07A, the most recent collection of basic
network tools for Linux.
The primary distribution site for NetKit-B-0.07A is as follows:
ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/Networking/base/NetKit-B-0.07A.tar.gz
