ESA-2016-037: EMC PowerPath Management Appliance Information Disclosure Vulnerability

EMC Identifier: ESA-2016-037

CVE Identifier: CVE-2016-0890

Severity Rating: CVSS v3 Base Score: 6.4 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:L)

Affected products:
EMC PowerPath Virtual (Management) Appliance 2.0
EMC PowerPath Virtual (Management) Appliance 2.0 SP1

Summary:
EMC PowerPath Virtual Appliance is affected by a sensitive information disclosure vulnerability that may potentially be exploited by malicious users to compromise the affected system

Details:
The service running on port 5672 (AMQP server) in PowerPath Virtual (Management) Appliance listens on both loopback and external interfaces. The external interface for this service is unnecessary but, when it is used, the messages are transmitted in plain text. A malicious user with access to exposed communication path may potentially sniff sensitive information, such as credentials, over this interface.

Resolution:
The external interface has been disabled in EMC PowerPath Management Appliance version 2.1. Customers can either upgrade to this version or apply the workaround to remediate this issue.

The following EMC PowerPath Management Appliance release contains the resolution to this vulnerability:

EMC PowerPath Management Appliance version 2.1

Note: The PowerPath Virtual Appliance has been renamed to PowerPath Management Appliance.

EMC recommends all customers upgrade at the earliest opportunity.

Workaround:

If you are unable to upgrade to EMC PowerPath Management Appliance 2.1, the following workaround may be applied:

Disable AMQP port 5672 from external access using "iptables". Log in to the PowerPath Virtual (Management) Appliance as root and execute the following commands:

# iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 5672 -s <vApp IP> -j ACCEPT
# iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 5672 -s localhost -j ACCEPT
# iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 5672 -j DROP
