ESA-2015-163: EMC VPLEX Sensitive Information Exposure Vulnerability

EMC Identifier: ESA-2015-163

CVE Identifier: CVE-2015-6847

Severity Rating: CVSS v2 Base Score: 6.8 (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C)

Affected products:
EMC VPLEX GeoSynchrony 5.4 Service Pack 1
EMC VPLEX GeoSynchrony 5.4 Service Pack 1 Patch 1

Summary:
EMC VPLEX GeoSynchrony code levels 5.4 SP1 and 5.4 SP1 P1 contain a vulnerability that allows a user password to be logged in plaintext when the user attempts to login via the NAVISPEHERE Graphical User Interface (GUI) that could potentially be exploited by malicious users.

Details:
The default log level setting of the affected VPLEX releases logged passwords in plain text for all VPLEX users that attempt to login through the GUI. Any malicious user with access to the log files can obtain these passwords and access the VPLEX server with privileges of the compromised user(s). In case of VPLEX systems configured with an external directory server (LDAP/AD), unauthorized access can also be gained to other systems, if the system is accessible utilizing the compromised LDAP/AD user account.

Resolution:
The following VPLEX GeoSynchrony code releases contain a resolution for this vulnerability:
• EMC VPLEX GeoSynchrony 5.4 SP1 P3 has the fix for this vulnerability. Upgrading to this version will remove exposed passwords from existing log files and prevent plain text logging in the future for all log levels.
• EMC VPLEX GeoSynchrony 5.5 does not have the complete fix. It only modifies the log level setting of the affected log files. Upgrading to this version will only prevent plain text logging in the future for all log levels, it does not remove exposed passwords and the pre-existing log level file is still vulnerable to exposure. To remove existing affected log files, customers must follow the instructions in the KB Article “EMC VPLEX Sensitive Information Exposure Vulnerability” prior to upgrading to 5.5.

Note: VS1 customers cannot upgrade to 5.5, only VS2 hardware is capable of running 5.5. VS1 customers must upgrade to 5.4 SP1 P3, and VS2 customers can go to either 5.4 SP1 P3, or 5.5.
EMC recommends all customers to upgrade to one of the above listed versions at their earliest opportunity. Customers are also strongly advised to reset passwords for all affected users to fully mitigate the risk.

Workaround:
Please follow the instructions in “EMC VPLEX Sensitive Information Exposure Vulnerability ” to change the log level to an unaffected one and remove the existing affected log files.

This workaround WILL NOT prevent logging plaintext passwords if the log level is changed back to the affected one.

Link to remedies:
Customers must follow the KB and can download the script mentioned in the KB from EMC’s On-Line Support.
