Ubuntu Security Notice 1217-1 - Kristian Erik Hermansen discovered a directory traversal vulnerability in the SSLFile indirection base class. A remote attacker could exploit this to overwrite files with the privileges of the Puppet Master.

puppet vulnerability

A security issue affects these releases of Ubuntu and its derivatives:

- Ubuntu 11.04
- Ubuntu 10.10
- Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Summary:

An attacker could send crafted input to puppet and cause it to overwrite
files.

Details:

Kristian Erik Hermansen discovered a directory traversal vulnerability in
the SSLFile indirection base class. A remote attacker could exploit this to
overwrite files with the privileges of the Puppet Master.

Update instructions:

The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following
package versions:

Ubuntu 11.04:
puppet-common 2.6.4-2ubuntu2.2

Ubuntu 10.10:
puppet-common 2.6.1-0ubuntu2.1

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS:
puppet-common 0.25.4-2ubuntu6.2

In general, a standard system update will make all the necessary changes.
