Congress to hold first data breach legislation hearing

The new Congress will move one step closer to creating a national breach notification law next week as they meet to discuss the topic for the first time on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Following President Obama's recent call for a national standard that would supersede the varying laws already in place in 47 states, House and Senate Democrats will be working to introduce a draft of the new legislation, according to The Hill.

Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, would like the hearing to serve as an opportunity to create a plan that will “alleviate consequences for consumers if hackers are successful.”

Potential new legislation likely would require breached organizations to notify those customers impacted by the incident within 30 days, in addition to reporting the breach to the government.
