POS malware threatens payment cards used at Marriott in California

Texas-based hotel management company Presidian is notifying an undisclosed number of individuals that malware was found on three point-of-sale (POS) terminals used at food and beverage outlets in the Visalia Marriott at the Convention Center in California, and their payment card information may have been compromised.

How many victims? Undisclosed. SCMagazine.com asked in a Tuesday email, but Presidian did not provide the information. 

What type of personal information? Names, credit and debit card numbers, security codes and card expiration dates.

What happened? Malware was found on three POS terminals used at food and beverage outlets in the Visalia Marriott at the Convention Center in California, and customer payment card information may have been compromised.

What was the response? The POS system was deactivated. An investigation is ongoing. The POS system is being changed to prevent a similar incident from occurring again. All impacted individuals are being notified, and offered a free year of credit monitoring services.

Details: The POS system was compromised from July 26, 2014, to Sept. 2, 2014.

Quote: “Law enforcement has not notified us of any arrests; our investigation is on-going and we are fully cooperating with law enforcement and the credit card companies,” according to a FAQ posted to the Presidian website.
